How Electromagnetic Frequencies Impact Mental & Physical Health

What is EMF?

Electromagnetic fields, or EMFs as they are more commonly known, are invisible frequencies of energy. They are emitted from man-made sources such as Wi-Fi networks, computers, cell phones, and even electric lines.

The NIH has long held that most devices that generate EMFs are not harmful because they cause only low levels of radiation that do not impact human health. However, many studies have clearly shown that chronic EMF exposure does have serious health consequences even if the devices one is exposed to only emit low-intensity EMFs.

It is inevitable that non-thermal EMF effects would have a negative impact on the body. Humans are electromagnetic beings; thus, they are affected by any form of electromagnetic energy. What's more, humans aren't the only living beings affected by this form of energy. One study found that even rats develop tumors when exposed to the same level of EMF radiation emitted by cell phones.

How Can Electromagnetic Fields Cause Mental Dysfunction in Humans?

EMFs suppress the body’s production of melatonin, a vital hormone that regulates sleep patterns. Low levels of this hormone have long been associated with a heightened risk of depression. EMFs also impact the balance of other important neurotransmitters the human body needs to stay mentally stable, including dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine.

Furthermore, EMFs cause negative changes in the hypothalamus and pituitary glands which impact the release of hormones the body needs to regulate growth, temperature, metabolism, and more. These hormones indirectly affect one’s moods, energy levels, and ability to sleep well at night.

The Connection Between EMFs and EMF Depression and Anxiety

Studies clearly show that there is a very real connection between chronic EMF exposure and the development of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.

A 2018 study examined over one hundred power plant workers for signs of EMF sickness. It found that daily exposure to EMF causes mental health issues, even if the electromagnetic fields are low-frequency. Mental health problems include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress

Those exposed to low-intensity EMFs also experienced a decrease in sleep quality, which causes and exacerbates EMF depression, anxiety, and stress. Not surprisingly, symptoms were most severe in those who had the greatest exposure to low-frequency EMF.

A study of low-frequency electromagnetic fields done in 2021 backs up the information from the first study while also noting that EMFs have a negative impact on gut bacteria. Other research has proven that gut bacteria influence brain function and the wrong forms of bacteria can cause mood disorders. In general, medical professionals are increasingly linking EMF exposure to neuropsychiatric effects.

The Physical Impact of EMF Sickness

Exposure to EMF can cause more than a mental health condition. Depression, anxiety, insomnia, and stress can cause the following physical health ailments, or make them worse if they are already present:

  • Weakened immune system
  • Heart conditions
  • High blood pressure
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches and sore muscles
  • Weight gain

How to Prevent or Eliminate EMF Sickness

EMF protection devices protect your body from the harmful effects of daily exposure to EMF, so you can use wireless devices without putting yourself at risk. These EMF protection products are available as:

  • Stickers for cell phones & wireless devices
  • Bracelets, pendant necklaces, wristbands
  • Smart Watch devices
  • Full EMF protection systems for a home or vehicle

Limit Exposure

One of the most apparent ways of limiting exposure to EMF is to take time away from devices that emit these frequencies. Turn off the phone or leave it in the house while you go outside and garden, take a walk, or go for a jog. Shop in person rather than online. Put your laptop on a desk, not your lap.

Since WiFi routers are big emitters of EMF radiation, turn them off at night. And don't sleep with your cell phone next to your bed - unless it's in airplane mode. The more you can limit exposure the better, even when using EMF protection devices.

Focus on Gut Health

Improving your gut health can give your body the strength it needs to withstand continued exposure to electromagnetic frequencies. Some tried and proven ways to give your gut health a boost include:

  • Eating fiber-rich foods. Fruits, vegetables, whole-grain foods, and legumes are all good options.
  • Eat foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, kimchi, and kombucha. You may also want to take a probiotic supplement, especially if you are taking antibiotics.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it puts a strain on gut health.
  • Get plenty of exercise. Exercise increases gut microbiome diversity. What's more, it also lowers stress and anxiety levels and enables you to get a good night's sleep.

EMF-induced mental health problems are real, but they do not need to ruin your quality of life. Consider the good health habits outlined above to improve both your physical and mental health.
