Is My Home Safe of EMF Radiation for Newborns?
by Martin GrosjeanWhat would we do without all our electronic gadgets, which help to save us time and make our lives easier? If you’re a new parent, you’re likely busier than ever, and you may be thinking of purchasing a baby monitor to keep an eye on your newborn at every moment. But could the RF radiation from the monitor be dangerous for babies? And if so, is there anything you can do about it?
In this article, we’ll examine EMF health risks to infants, from both baby monitors and other sources within the home. Keep reading to learn if your home is safe and how to protect your child from Wi-Fi radiation.
What is EMF Radiation?
Electromagnetic fields (or EMFs) are energy fields that are created by electrical power, lights, and wireless communication. The transmission of this energy is also known as EMF radiation. There are two types of electromagnetic radiation—ionizing and non-ionizing. Ionizing radiation is in the mid to high-frequency bands, and this includes x-rays, gamma rays and ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. Ionizing radiation is very harmful to human health and can cause DNA damage, among other issues.
Non-ionizing radiation is in the low to mid-frequency bands and is found in products all around our homes and neighborhoods, from computers and microwave ovens to Wi-Fi networks, cell phones, Bluetooth devices, smart meters, baby monitors and power lines. Studies have found that there are also health risks due to non-ionizing radiation, including an increased risk of headaches, tremors, dizziness, loss of concentration, memory loss, sleep disturbance and cancer.
Is Non-Ionizing EMF Radiation Dangerous?
In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified non-ionizing EMF in the radiofrequency (RF) range as a possible carcinogen, with the potential to cause glioma, a malignant brain cancer.
There is now a long list of studies that show cell phone and wireless radiation – at even very low levels - can harm our health in a number of different ways. In addition to physical illness, other researchers have discovered widespread neuropsychiatric effects such as fatigue, depression, insomnia and anxiety from cell phone radiation exposure.
You can read a high-level summary of why you need to be concerned about EMF radiation exposure here (including links to long lists of scientific studies demonstrating heath damage at the bottom of the page).
Electromagnetic Radiation and Babies
The concern regarding babies and young children is that a child’s developing brain is more vulnerable to electromagnetic radiation than an adult’s brain. What’s more, a child’s developing nervous system is “more conductive and absorbs more electromagnetic energies.”
Children are more susceptible to RF radiation since a child’s skull is thinner and it can absorb more radiation. As researchers have pointed out, current standards established by the FCC for the allowed level of radiation in consumer wireless devices is based on adults’ physiology and not that of young children.
Is Wi-Fi Harmful to Babies?
WiFi routers and other radiation-emitting electronic devices may be harmful to babies in early development. In 2016, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued recommendations to reduce children’s exposure to cell phones. Since that time, we have added many more wireless devices in our homes. Like most environmental toxins, the dangers from exposure to EMF radiation is a combination of strength and duration. So an infant or baby exposed to many small sources of radiation added together and over long periods of time should be cause for concern.
Do Baby Monitors Emit Radiation?
Electromagnetic radiation and babies’ monitors are of great concern since they’re kept on all night near the infant. Since the monitor and base station communicate wirelessly via their own “network” and must penetrate walls and transmit a long distance, the EMF signals must necessarily be strong. According to Wired Child, a digital baby monitor placed three feet away from a crib emits microwave radiation equivalent to a cell phone tower 164 yards away!
Is Bluetooth Harmful for Babies?
Devices that use Bluetooth technology to communicate - which is true of most modern baby monitors - typically transmit nonstop, emitting radiation even in a standby mode. Scientists have found that continuous Bluetooth exposure, even if it’s less powerful, can be as dangerous than exposure from intermittent, more powerful sources.
Negative health effects on babies of microwave radiation include an impact on brain development, disruption of the sleep cycle, and impacts on the reproductive and immune systems.
How to Reduce EMF Exposure at Home
Here are some ways you can protect your baby from the effects of EMF radiation:
- Set your cell phone to airplane mode when not in use.
- Turn off wireless devices and WiFi routers at night.
- Do not use your phone or Wi-Fi when you’re experiencing a poor signal—cell phone radiation increases as it searches for a connection.
- Increase distance from the cell phone, iPad, laptop, and other wireless devices when holding your baby.
- Do not have a phone or Wi-Fi router near the baby crib.
- Use a hard-wired baby monitor (not Bluetooth or WiFi) to avoid baby monitor radiation.
Can You Use Your Devices and Protect Your Children from EMF Radiation?
While these recommendations will help to reduce your baby’s EMF exposure, they may not be enough—and they may not be practical. Fortunately, there’s a better solution.
EMF Harmony offers a revolutionary EMF radiation neutralizer system for your home. It is an EMF protection system that harmonizes the electromagnetic radiation coming from within and outside of the home to protect your entire family.
