Are Wireless Headphones & Earbuds Safe?

In recent years the use of Bluetooth technology has exploded along with the many other types of wireless electromagnetic communication. Although Bluetooth EMF radiation emissions are generally on the low end compared to other types like 5G cellular or WiFi networks, there is concern among scientists and health professionals related to wireless audio devices about the proximity to the body and the extended length of exposure - both of which are risk factors for EMF exposure.
One of the challenges in determining the health risks from wireless headphones and earbuds is the lack of research on the issue, especially related to long-term use. And that challenge is also a concern, because what little research has been done has uncovered definite potential negative health effects. And when you add that to the overwhelming amount of scientific research documenting health risks from EMF radiation exposure in general, it becomes obvious that this is and issue that we should be concerned about.
What Kind of Radiation Do Bluetooth Devices Emit?
Bluetooth headphones emit a very specific type of non-ionizing EMF frequency known as radio-frequency radiation (RFR). While RFR is weaker than the EMF emissions from cellphones and wireless routers, it poses its own unique risks to people.
Many believe that consistent, long-term exposure to RFR frequencies can have detrimental health effects. To this end, studies conducted by the National Toxicology Program (US Dept of Health & Human Services) showed RFR to cause cancer and DNA damage in laboratory rats. This is one example among many similar studies, but is worht pointing out since it is from a respected US government agency.
Are Wireless Bluetooth Headphones Safe?
As with most wireless technology, Bluetooth earbuds were generally deemed harmless before we had a chance to adequately research their potential impacts on the human body. But according to one of the leading experts on EMF radiation and biology, Dr. Joel Moskowitz from the School of Public Health at the University of California Berkeley, there is cause for concern. He has a good synopsis of the issue and the relevant studies on his website Safer EMR. He sites over two dozen studies discussing the potential health impacts of AirPods and similar wireless audio devices. A few relevant studies worth summarizing here:

Dasdag et al., 2015 — 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi exposure, 24 h/day for one year. Sixteen rats were exposed for 12 months, which makes this unusually relevant to cumulative exposure. The researchers reported altered expression of two brain microRNAs, miR-106b-5p and miR-107, and raised the possibility that long-term 2.4-GHz RF could affect pathways relevant to neurodegenerative disease.
- Kızmaz et al., 2022 — 2.4 GHz exposure for one year. Again, rats were exposed 24 hours/day for a year. Researchers found changes in brain miRNA expression and in some brain-cell membrane/depot fatty-acid components, including phosphatidylserine and triacylglycerol. This is particularly interesting because it is a genuinely long-duration experiment at the same general carrier-frequency band as Bluetooth.
- Sharma et al., 2018 — 2.45 GHz, brain oxidative stress, behavior and neuronal morphology. Rats exposed 4 hours/day for 45 days showed poorer learning/memory performance and anxiety-like behavior, increased lipid peroxidation and caspase-3 expression, reduced antioxidant defenses, and reduced dendritic branching.
- Zhou et al., 2024 — Bluetooth headset use and thyroid nodules. This is one of the rare epidemiological studies specifically involving Bluetooth headset usage. Among 600 questionnaire respondents, longer daily Bluetooth headset use emerged as an important predictor of thyroid nodules after their statistical modeling. It demonstrates an association, not causation, but it is noteworthy because prolonged Bluetooth use itself was the exposure variable.
What are the Dangers of EMF Exposure on the Brain?
While studies into the risks of EMF radiation exposure and the brain are still in their infancy, scientists have uncovered some troubling findings. According to a study which appeared in the journal Nature, consistent contact with EMF emissions and the brain could lead to changes in nerve function. In turn, these alterations can adversely affect things like sleep patterns and mood stability.
Other studies show a loose connection between high rates of cellphone exposure and glioma type cancer in the brain and spinal cord. Of particular concern is the fact that these tumors seem to grow on the same sides of the brain where cellphones were positioned for the studies. Overall, we still have a good deal to learn about the potential risks of EMF exposure on the brain. Yet, given the research available on the negative health effects of EMF radiation exposure in general, we believe it is best to be cautious.
